The 1812 Overture is an overture written in 1880 by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to commemorate Russia´s defence of its motherland against Napoleon´s invading Grande Armée in 1812.
The overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire, ringing chimes, and brass fanfare finale. It has also become a common accompaniment to fireworks displays at outdoor concerts throughout the world.
Very popular in concert band repertoire, it is not accessible to all the bands, because of its difficulty. Here is an arrangement in a short, easier and more accessible version.
It allows to listen to the main themes and makes possible, especially the young musicians, the contact with a great symphonic work and the discovery of an excellent composer.
